If you receive a bomb threat by phone, text message, note, email, IM, etc. treat it seriously; handle the threat as if there really is an explosive in the building. Every business/ place of employment should have a plan in place for this situation but here are a few tips in getting through it.
If you receive a bomb threat on phone, ignore every instinct you have to hang up and run screaming around the office like a chicken with it's head cut off. Keep the person on the phone for as long as possible. Start taking notes; be aware, not only of what the person is saying but what noises you hear in the background.
Have a codeword that you would not use in everyday speech, like kazoo, that you could use while on the phone to clue in your co-workers. While you are taking notes, they can be calling 9-1-1.
If you see a suspicious package, DO NOT TOUCH IT! Clear the area around the package and notify police.
While evacuating, avoid standing in front of or close to windows and other potentially dangerous areas, do not block the sideways, and remember to stay calm.
