Washington Officials Baffled by Tsunami Alert Gone Wrong

Share

Washington state officials are still trying to track down what went wrong with  the state's tsunami alert test this week.

Emergency management officials tested the state's network of 50 warning sirens Monday in Pacific, Grays, Harbor, Jefferson and Clallam counties, and were alarmed to discover, that many of the alarms did not work correctly. Instead of audible chimes and a recording message explaining that a test was under way, many people heard actual tsunami alerts and sire wails. In some cases, people heard warnings about a lahar -- a mudslide triggered by a volcanic eruption.

This prompted considerable confusion and panic, with 911 reporting a significant volume of calls concerned about the alarms.

Olympia's spokesman for emergency management, Rob Harper told local media in Seattle that the system has been working correctly or the last year, and that the state was working with its contractor that built the system to determine what caused the errors.
