Five Reported Dead in Oklahoma Tornadoes

Share

Five people have been reported dead so far after tornadoes, thunderstorms and baseball-sized hail swarmed over areas of Oklahoma and Kansas.

Fifty-eight others were also reported injured in the storms, which struck ares near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, (where all five deaths were reported) and Belmont and Topeka, Kansas. Oklahoma City Deputy Fire Chief Cecil Clay told the Associate Press that the death toll could rise, but it would take time to get an official count.

"We have heavy fog (and) power lines down making it difficult to see all the hazards out there," he said. "We'll wait for more sunshine to resume our search."

Authorities have told residents to avoid the roads for now as conditions remain dangerous, both from the weather itself and threats from the damage it caused. Four neighborhoods in Oklahoma City have been closed due to gas leaks, downed power lines, and debris.

Power outages have been reported around the state, from both rural electric cooperatives and large utility companies. Homes without electricity currently number more than 50,000.

Meteorologist Ty Judd of the National Weather Service in Norman, Oklahoma said that there were some 10 tornado touchdowns in Oklahoma alone.

"There is a chance of thunderstorms later this afternoon," he said. "We're not looking at what we saw yesterday."
