The latest reports from Haiti continue to be grueling as tremors reportedly damaged the south pier in Port-au-Prince, limiting the flow of supplies from aid ships. According to CNN, more than 150,000 are suspected dead from that nation’s earthquake, with as many as one million homeless.
The United States Embassy estimates 4,500 to 5,000 Americans are missing but numbers are hard to estimate with so many buried in hastily made mass graves by the Haitian government. The relation between western media and the local government have apparently cooled, with many correspondents complaining that Haitian officials are not only refraining from comment about the situation, most are simply hanging up their phones at this point.
On a brighter note, French rescue teams have rescued seventeen-year-old Darlene Etienne 15 days after the earthquake buried her in the rubble remains of her home. The teenager was found conscious and said she was near her bathroom and was able to drink small amounts of water to survive more than a fortnight while trapped. She is currently receiving treatment at a French military field hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
